Homemade Optavia Bars

If you’re like me, you’ve probably purchased an Optavia snack or meal replacement bar before ( I think they taste like chocolate graham crackers with icing on top).

So I decided to make my own. They are easy to make and pretty delicious. Remember that this recipe makes 12 bars, but it can easily be divided in half.

Ingredients:

1. 1/2 cup dry quinoa

2. 1/4 cup peanut butter (or any nut butter)

3. 1/4 cup honey (if vegan, replace with other coconut sugar

4. 2 Tbsp ground flaxseed (optional- for added fiber and omega-3s)

Directions:

1. Follow the instructions on the package or cook on the stovetop by adding one cup of water for each 1/4 cup of dry quinoa.

2. Mix all ingredients together in one bowl. Mix well until the mixture is sticky but not enough to keep it together.

If it is too crumbly, add either more peanut butter or honey. If it is too sticky, add additional quinoa or ground flaxseed.

3. Once the mixture is ready, spread into an 8×8 pan that has been lined with parchment paper (or lightly greased). Use a spatula to flatten and push the mixture to the edges of the pan.

4. Place in freezer for 20-30 minutes or fridge for 3-5 hours to set. Take out and cut into 12 bars. They can be kept in a closed receptacle at room temperatures; however, keeping them in the refrigerator is recommended to stop the melting.

Q2. What to do if you run out of Optavia Fuelings?

If you have used your 9 Fuelings and cannot get a hold of anyone at Optavia, here are some opinions on what to do.

1) Continue on as per the schedule. This is not ideal as most people can lose about 2-3 lbs a week, so those weeks become wasteful after the first two weeks.

2) If you are not losing at a constant 1-2 lbs per week, the first thing to do is look at your calories.

If you are under an amount that will support consistent weight loss, raise them slowly until you can maintain between 1400-1600 kcals/day for women and 1800-2000 kcals/day for men.

3) If you are consistently under 1400-1600 kcals/day and aren’t losing, then take a look and see if you are under your daily nutritional allowance.

The amount you should take in depends on your age, weight, sex, and activity level but generally is around 18-20 calories per day per pound of bodyweight.

If this doesn’t resolve the issue or you can’t find a source for Optavia Fuelings, then look at how many servings of Optavia foods you have left and add extra servings until you are at the right number of calories.

If your activity level has drastically changed, you will need to adjust your nutritional allowance.

4) If you are under 1400-1600 kcals/day and losing weight but only by a couple of pounds per week, try to add in a Fueling before bed, but remember to increase your calories back up if you have success.

If this doesn’t work or you can’t find a source for Optavia Fuelings, then look at how many servings of Optavia foods you have left and add extra servings until you are at the right number of calories.

Q3. What can I eat instead of protein bars?

Protein bars are a wonderful practice to add more protein to your diet.

However, suppose you find that you’re tired of the taste or aren’t working for your lifestyle. In that case, it’s time to look into some alternative options.

Here are some ideas on what can be swapped in place of protein bars:
